Editors' Quick Thoughts

XK0-001 - This cert, as all CompTIA certs, match only 1 exam to each cert. Linux+ also follows suit in that it is an entry level, vendor neutral credential. It covers the basics of Linux installation, operation and maintenance. Introduced in 2001, this has become a good first step towards higher level Linux certs such as LPI & RHCE. As far as the exam is concerned, it's not terribly difficult. Although it could be passed with a good book, CBT Nuggets & a practice test, experience makes the whole thing that much easier.

XK0-002 - This is the newly revamped version of Linux+. The old version, 001, will only be available until July 2005, so we have made the changes to the details most important of which is the higher grade needed to pass from 655 to 675. Other changes are a higher number of questions and a slightly lower price for non-members. The material tested on the 2 exams is very similar. There are only a few additions. Stay tuned for more info on study materials that deal specifically with version XK0-002 such as CBT Nuggets.

From the Horse's Mouth (CompTIA Web Site Content):

CompTIA Linux+ certification is an international industry credential that validates the knowledge of individuals with at least six months of practical Linux experience. Professionals who want to certify their technical knowledge in basic installation, operation and troubleshooting for Linux operating systems should consider this certification. The skills and knowledge measured by this examination were developed with global input to assure accuracy, validity and reliability. Earning the CompTIA Linux+ designation means that the candidate can explain fundamental open source resources/licenses, demonstrate knowledge of user administration, understand file permissions/software configurations and manage local storage devices and network protocols.

Because Linux, by its nature, is vendor-independent, there was a strong need in the industry for a basic, comprehensive Linux certification. Becoming CompTIA Linux+ certified gives an individual a recognized industry credential that offers proof of knowledge and expertise in Linux technologies. This certification also provides a path to a variety of fulfilling and challenging Linux-related careers.

CompTIA Linux+™ and your Career
The demand for skilled Linux support professionals has grown significantly and candidates as well as the industry have indicated that a foundation-level certification for this job function is necessary.
